Beyond The Bouquet

ART DIRECTION

Art directed and styled a series of abstract
floral arrangements inspired by ikebana to
address the beauty, superficiality and temporality
of highly manicured arrangements.

Working alongside floral stylist Ekta Hathiramani, we produced a series of abstract floral arrangements that reflect many of the hallmarks of the traditional Japanese practice known as Ikebana. Using tropical flora and fauna, the series seeks to develop something more fresh and exotic than the traditional Valentines’ day bouquet.

By mixing unexpected shapes such as squares or rectangles, the freestyle compositions include dramatic, deeply lobed leaves such as those of the monstera plant, or cascading trumpet-shaped yellow blooms that evoke openness and ease. With an affinity for symmetry and imbalance, the arrangements attempt to challenge the conventional.
